Many people use texting as just a way to send a few words to a friend. Sometimes people use it because its more private than an actually phone call where people can hear you talking, with texting no one knows what your talking about are saying. When people are calling others you can normally assume that the conversation will be longer than a text or it maybe easier to just say it instead of texting a long message. For me texting is normally just a quick message or when i dont have time to actually talk on the phone. Also sometimes there actually conversations. i think that texting is easier when trying to send quick messages without other people necessarily knowing.
